Well today was such an exhilarating, exciting day that I'd almost been keeping to myself. A couple of weeks back, I signed up to do a voiceover training course. That in itself is a long story but I'll skip the detail and get to today.
Today was my voiceover demo recording in a sound studio in Edenvale. Yup, the other side of Johannesburg. Yesterday, when I discovered the address for my 9am appointment, I realised that I didn't want to risk getting stuck in early morning loadshedding traffic and make myself more stressed, so I booked a real cheap bnb and spent the night around the corner from my appointment.
After a quick breakfast at a nearby coffee shop, I headed over to the studio and I saw a tartan shop while one of my teenage band songs came on the radio. I really love my cosmic Dj's sense of humour, and this made my smile even wider. I was early so I walked around the shops until the friendly engineer arrived. Loadshedding was half way through so the emergency lights were on and my excellent teacher popped up on the zoom call from the Eastern Cape.
One hour later and a whole lot of dialogue recorded, I finally relaxed. It was done, I did it and according to both gentlemen, I did great. It was a lot of fun and I'm really enjoying the process of learning something completely new and way out of my comfort zone. Now the recordings will be edited into a package that I can use to promote myself as a voiceover talent! Who knew? Lol.
I love adventures, and pushing myself into spaces that have never previously been thought of. This career will suit me as I travel plus it will help me get more polished when I do my online travel clips. It was so unforeseen though, that I'm a little surprised by it all. The South African Voice Over Academy (SAVOA) has been such a delightful surprise and they totally accommodated my last minute dotcom move of squeezing 4 weeks into two so I could complete it before I leave for the UK. I'm so grateful to them for that.
So now, I am looking at microphones, laptops and portable soundproofing online and it all gets me so excited.
We're never too old to learn something new, and welcome in new opportunities!
