Witches and ghosts?

Updated: Jun 4, 2022

Friday 3rd June 2022 Waking up in a room that was so old gave me a chance to think about the lives of the people who may have slept there in the centuries before. I have much appreciation for our ancestors but I am mighty appreciative of the electric blanket that eased me into my slumber last night.

I showered early and saw the owners sitting outside in the crisp sunshine and decided to join them leaving Angie to sleep.  The couple are fascinating, having lived in the town all their lives and I was told all sorts of stories of farmer's sheep and nightime foxes and the like.

The man of the house has been preoccupied with digging his replica Peruvian Ancient Nazca Spiral well, which I'd briefly researched.  For the last seven years or so he's been at it. So when I asked why, he answered it is his therapy. His wife died from cancer a decade ago and he admitted that the digging helps.  In a small forest, in Mid England I witnessed the skeleton of a spiral well by a  grieving widower, etched deep into the soil. I needed to take another look now that I understood it better. The pathway wasn't as welcoming as last night perhaps because I was on my own. I moved quicker down to the pit, marveling at the cables, earth and huge trees needed to host one man's pain. I took pictures, thanked the space and returned to the house.

Close to the time of leaving, I asked the owner to show me the 'witch warding off' markings that we weren't able to see in the evening light. And there it was- a circle with more circles and lines coming from it written in the 1500s as a means of keeping the darkness away. As the owner joked that it must've worked because in his 50 years of residence he'd never experienced any ghosts, I felt a cold shiver down my neck but decided to remain quiet, lol.
