I woke up to some of the heaviest rain I've seen and was very glad that I hadn't planned any adventures on foot for the day. My brother had arranged to visit an old friend from my younger years, (as in primary school days) and I was looking forward to seeing her. She moved to the UK from South Africa after she had started nursing and had been one of my role models for me to do my nursing.
A decade later, she'd married a Scotsman and had moved near Glasgow. Sometimes I wonder how we managed to keep contact in those times without the internet. Christmas cards and phones were all that kept some friendships intact. But we didn't know any different then. I was reminded of that when my friend's husband was looking through an address book and some envelopes and scraps of papers with numbers written on them. He found what he was looking for and promptly stored it on his phone. It was a lovely visit full of laughter, stories and some tears.
The roads were full of water on route there and I was glad that I was a passenger in the weather and not the one driving. The return journey had the sun shining and the landscape changed completely. It still looks really green here even with all the new deposits of red leaves everywhere.
Although I'm very glad that I will be following the summer next month, there's a part of me that was feeling like it needed to hibernate and hide from the world. But that only lasted a couple of yawning hours. There's things to do, and stuff to learn and food to eat!
