Venice-Venezia. A fascinating place that is buzzing with everything that is completely foreign to me. There's bridges, churches, construction, refuse removal, deliveries, schools, ambulances and many other things all on water, that I simply hadn't thought of.
Why does it not all sink, flood, crumble or float away? Mmm, will have to do some general research.
It's fascinating to walk along the canals admiring the different architecture, while the boats all go rushing by. The laundry hanging on ropes up high, the dark alleyways going into cool courtyards and residences. I have so many questions...
The coffee shops and glassware are just so delightful and people take their dogs everywhere, even on the water bus. This is the way we experienced the Grand Canal as the Gondolas are more romantic and sedate and rather pricey. The water buses were fast, efficient, crowded and fun. We took one over to one of the quieter Islands, the Lido, where we found a beach, beautiful residences, quiet and clean streets and hundreds of bicycles. It felt surreal sitting on the pavement drinking a milk. Yes, I'd asked for a 'latte' instead of a 'Cafe latte' haha.
The Italians are so classy and chic, apart from the smoking. The clothes look beautiful in the shops and on the person and people seem really slim. There's a lot of walking happening and people meet in the town square after work to talk, theatre and socialise. I know I'm basing my assumptions on a very limited time and tiny glimpse of two cities but it feels so different. I always go on the 'feel' of a place. There's great feelings in Venice and I don't think it's just the tourists.
Heading back to London tomorrow after an exhilarating few days.
