Sunday 7th May 2023
I woke up to Johannesburg Winter. The wind was howling (Jhb style -not Cape style) and an icy breeze was a quite a jolt to the mild weathered me of the past few weeks. I was meeting my friends early so I was on a pleasantly quiet road by 8.30am.
These two friends of mine, I've known since I was 10. That's a really long time now and we had a lovely few hours of catch-up and great food. By the time we left the restaurant, it was buzzing and full. It's pleasing to see, as many small businesses are closing up shop due to... well, life in the 2020's.
I drove back to my side and tried to visit my sister. I'm not always one for planning or confirming and I love just popping by unannounced. However I should've checked with her today, as she was out. So perhaps I'll listen to the mental cues I get, to check before I drive, lol.
It's hard to imagine that in a few quick days I'll be on the other side of the world. It feels like I arrived to a very wet November, a very long time ago. But April spun by very quickly. It feels a little harder to say goodbye this time, although I certainly won't miss the frustration of loadshedding. I'm also not going to miss the winter Highveld bite.
I feel very honoured to be able to live this way, and enjoy both aspects of my character - Africa and Britain. I'm thoroughly enjoying the exploration and adventure. Plus all the extra magic that the universe is supplying to me. I'm grateful that I have a big supportive family, who supply the beds and bathrooms, not to mention meals. It's just feeling a bit tough saying goodbye, although I have the privilege of returning. A privilege I hope not to take advantage of.
