Tour taraaa!

Wednesday 27th April 2022 I woke up excited and eager to get my tour done. So I headed off early to the Constitutional Hill precinct to prepare and check out parking.  As I got out of my car, a frosty breeze zapped me and I toyed with taking my jacket but knew I'd be moving around a lot so didn't. At the visitor center I bumped into fellow tour guide (and student) Dave, so we walked around a bit and he gave some more information about the site. The chilly air grabbed my hands and I fumbled about with my different equipment in preparation for the set up.

Being a public holiday there was a lot more people around and a few tour busses had already lined up. The Hilbrow tower was surrounded by the chilly mist but that just added to the dramatics of the day. Suddenly my guests arrived and we set off on time.

The different museum set-ups are fantastic albeit harrowing, but it explains over 90 years of punishment, torture and abuse of human rights and was eye opening for a lot of us.

Fortunately the Constitutional Court building is a happier, lighter place and that is where my tour ended just in time, before hundreds of protestors arrived.  The precinct is known for being a safe space for peaceful protests and today they were protesting human rights violations in lieu of covid restrictions. Peaceful they might be, but quiet not, so my timing for recording and talking to my small group ending right then, was perfect. My brain is now mushed.
