The pretty bay

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Sunday 3rd July 2022

Today was another catch up day. My cousin and I chatted about everything and anything and then we decided we needed to take a walk. There's a small church ruin called St Bridget's Kirk and with Bridget being my middle name I was keen to explore.

We parked on the road and started our walk on the decent pathway in between the farm fields. My cousin admitted to being scared of cows. I laughed at the memory of our 100 mile walk, in 2007 of the West Highland Way when my older sister admitted the same cow fear. Today's cows looked tired, I blamed post Sunday lunch slump. The one female looked heavily pregnant and she was sleeping quite heavily when we got close and I can't say I blame her. The sheep remained curious and meeh-ed hello.

The Kirk was unfortunately fenced off due to construction danger. This was a real pity because it looked in great condition for a 500 year old ruin. We managed to walk round the brick wall to the open graveyard with a spectacular view of the Firth of Forth. My cousin explained that a Firth in Scottish, means estuary and the Forth river is further along. The  graveyard didn't disappoint.  A headstone marking of 1767 plus a different one with a skull sculpture.  Unfortunately a lot of the writing is worn off or illegible so the stories of the souls remain hidden. Perhaps that's how they want it to be. But I loved being able to walk amongst the stones.

The Dalgetty Bay area was a landing strip area during the war and there was some radium luminous paint in one of the small bays which is still being cleared up. It was an important area for the Royal Navy in both World Wars and is now a quaint little town with 10 000 inhabitants with quite a lot of South Africans living here. Ex UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown also lives in the region and its really a pretty little town.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my visit even with the late nights.... zzzz
