Today we walked to the beach. We took the train down to a small town called Kilwinning which has an interesting history which I briefly touched on now, while looking up the name. My British history is extremely limited, fortunately my brother is well read and he said that the word 'kil' has it's origins possibly meaning church. When we walked past the old ruins, I saw why it was so aptly named. I might need to go down for a more detailed visit and explore more but today we were on an easy walk.
We ended up doing a 10km walk, when I stopped my watch and the weather was glorious. Fortunately we had a lot of shady bits until we got near the beach town of Irvine. I think the sun still got my face even with suncream and a hat. But not as bad as some of those marble white bodies lying on the beach. I think there may be some complaints tomorrow about sore skin.
The beach was busy for a school day and there were dogs, jellyfish and a couple of horses all enjoying the cold water. My brother and I are not fond of sand squidging in between our toes,so we walked fully foot covered while KJ waded in the shallows.
The path down from the station is a cycle path with route markers and is in really good condition. The tar seems better than many of the South African roads, sadly. But it was a lovely day with pretty flowers, cows, bumble bees and 'sticky willys' which is a very sticky plant that is hard to get off clothing or dogs. So many names of things that I don't know. But it's all fun and a great experience.
We saw Arran across the water as visibility was great today unlike our walk there last week. Fortunately my brother is able to point out all the different lands and hills and helps me understand geography of the land. There's no guarantee that I'll remember a lot, but I could now point out Arran.
After visiting the dragon for a different view, we had a yummy lunch at a local Cafe. The harbour area looks so neat and interesting. We didn't get into the Maritime museum, that too, will have to wait for next time
A pleasant day in 'Costa Clyde'
