25th December 2022
Christmas day arrived really early for me when I woke up around 2.30am. My shoulder was aching, my nose felt blocked and then I remembered I took an antihistamine. I managed to settle down in time to wake up again at 4.45. There was a beautiful pink touch to the clouds and by the time Rusty and I set off for our run, the sunrise was stunning.
It was peacefully quiet and I could spot some of the Christmas lights still shining on some houses. Rusty seemed happier with me and we made our way around the estate in silence. He stopped outside some fences which I now know are the houses of his 'friends'. I discovered that near the end of last year's housesit. This got me thinking about the psychology of dogs. What makes him like some dogs and not others? Some dogs barked through their fences, obviously not his friends as he mostly ignored those although his heckles went up. But we made it around our 5km comfortably and I felt really tired when I got back so I managed to snooze for a while before it was time for Christmas lunch.
We had a very easy meal arranged although I think mine was the easiest by buying a pre cooked chicken. The weather was hot which meant our cold meat and salad turned out to be a perfect meal for this Christmas day on this magical year. My tiredness wasn't over though so I had another nap on the couch. I woke up to Rusty bringing me his soft toy telling me to take him for his afternoon walk.
I took my camera with me and we had the park to ourselves again. It's lovely to see dogs run leash free in the very as they would be in the wild. He had one dart after the birds which surprised me because he usually ignores them. I was very grateful for him leaving alone the larger 'dikkop' birds which are very defensive and rather intimidating. We went back through the streets at the bottom of the resort and it was great hearing the laughter and festivities of this day of yule continue. Rusty passed out on the couch now, no doubt recharging for his 5am walk again tomorrow.
