Sometimes unplanned events can be the best thing. Today I joined my sister and my running wife for a trip on a trail. And yes, I did literally trip and fall although my ego was bruised more than my knee. While walking the 12km route we were chatting about the unseen gems in Johannesburg and I thought about how glad I am that I got over my fear of the 'dangerous world' years ago. Johannesburg is a city that is always full of surprises, but because it is 'home' so many people don't realise how much there is to explore.
The hike today took us along a part of the West side ridge, which is the reason for the city's existence. The meteor that landed over 120km away, in the Vredefort dome 400 billion years ago, caused a ripple so large that it caused our ridge to crack open for the gold to show up. Yup, I wasn't aware of that either, until 4 years ago.
To be tourist in your home town is exciting, especially during this boring time of lockdown and restrictions. When I started to look at my neighbourhood as if I was on holiday, all sorts of interesting things popped up. I'm still not done with the city, which is just as well because interprovincial travel is still prohibited until the end of July.
And August? Well, sister has a very comfortable spare bed which will be my nesting place until the winds of change present themselves. ( August is our month of winds 😉)
