Today was one of those hectic days, both energy wise and weather.
I stepped out of the front door ready for my run at 6.15am and it was raining. A light drizzle but I'd already psyched myself up to run so I started out. It was cool and I saw dark threatening clouds to the South making me ready to turn back at any time. By the time I'd got to 3km the rain stopped and the sun began to come out. After walking Molly I put a load of laundry on but unfortunately the weather turned again and I ended up hanging it inside.
After a frustrating wait at the Post Office to get my car licence and a stop at the Police station, I relaxed on Lorna's massage bed and listened as the rain lashed down.
A lull in the weather gave me a gap to get to my car. As I neared it I heard this strange woosh, and I felt a huge vacuum in the air as I closed the car door. Then a crack as the first angry hail cube hit the windscreen. Suddenly it was pelting down and I was convinced that my windows would break. The noise was deafening and I must admit I got scared. After a few minutes of noise and wild rain it slowed enough for me to make my way back. The roads were like rivers, branches all over the roads, mud, sludge and makeshift fountains as the water forced its way into rain drains.
The sun broke through the clouds and I could feel myself begin to relax. The suburbs looked like the aftermath of a war zone. The South Africans are exhausted and overwhelmed with life and nature just dumped a horrible load on my city. Rain continues to fall and I hope that the extreme weather is over. The morning light will present the extent of the damage and I hope there's no casualties.
Africa certainly is a land of extremes.
