I used to be scared of talking to strangers, or at least, making the opening hello. But I've relaxed about life, the world and people. Now I find myself sharing a listening nook on the base of a book Christmas tree in St Pancras station discussing cemeteries and journeys, hearing about the Magic bus across Persia to India in the 70s, tours by the old security guy of the derelict St Pancras hotel and sharing tips about train travel. Today had a magic all of it's own.
The gray sky and cold temperatures had me wear layer upon layer and appreciate my sister's woolly hat as I left my London friend's flat. It is hard saying goodbye to the pets and their owners but it's something I've learned to accept as part of the privilege of staying in people's homes.
I left very early before my scheduled train, as my friend was working from her office today. I'd planned to have tea in the ultra fancy tea room in one of my favourite buildings, St Pancras Hotel, but unfortunately there was a private conference happening and I couldn't get inside. So I walked around the building instead and took deep sighing breaths at the sheer beauty of the hand crafted stone work.
My train back to my sister's town was full so I felt a bit squashed at my 4 strangers-at-a-table. After the first stop 2 hours later, many seats opened up, but unfortunately a guy who snorts loudly, plonked himself across from me. Eventually I moved to the doorway seat because I knew I only had 15 minutes left to my destination, and the rattling of the roof was more pleasant, haha. The glamour of travel!
My sister picked me up and spoiled me with a yummy dinner and I'm tucked up again in 'my' comfy bed, feeling so grateful for all the adventures and amazing people I have in my life.
