St Hilda

Sunday 12th June 2022 A slow start to the day prepared us for a tour inside the Parish Church of St Hilda in the afternoon. It was open to the public from 2pm and we got there in time to have a guided tour.

It was built 1190-1250 of Early English design, and has been extended twice, the last time was in this century.  The Limestone had a strange damp feel to it which adds to it's character.  St Hilda was the Abess in the 7th Century and the church is built on what is believed to be the site of her monastery. I'm loving the ancient history and stories of so long ago. Our guide was an elderly gentleman who we guessed is in his Eighties and it was a pleasure being shown around into the tomb of a 7th century nun and the old Side entrance which is based on the Norman style architecture found in Durham cathedral.

I could go on about the stained glass windows,  gravestones and huge organ but we ended our visit with eating ice cream cones on the sunny square.  Then my sister treated us to a roast beef dinner complete with yummy cauliflower and cheese with my favourite ... Yorkshire Puddings! I better stop talking about food,  I'm making myself hungry again and it's full moon, lol.
