I woke up with a start thinking it must be morning but was only 3am. I think I was super excited about the small towns I'm finding myself in. I know that people are supposed to slow down when out of the city, but I seem to speed up. This morning I joined three fabulous ladies at breakfast in the converted church and am just loving every second of my fantastic World Tour of South Africa. I even did a skit which you can check out here. I realised afterwards that my excitement tumbles out of my mouth and mixes up my accents and words and my brain forgets the facts that I am trying to convey.
I was eager to get to the Walter Battiss Foundation as well as the Somerset East Museum tucked neatly at the bottom of the Boschkop mountains ( which is also a nature reserve). After my foundation visit it felt like I knew the artist, and I responded really well to his artwork. The building itself used to belong to Battiss' parents which they ran as a hotel. I love the history of the buildings in the small towns, and I fell in love instantly with the Old Mill standing forlornly opposite the refurbished foundation building. I had a random thought of 'I could live there' which was odd because it's really dilapidated and would take lots of money to restore. But, hey, never say never, right? After all I'm on a road trip with a fabulous prize car!
I'm so impressed with the secondary roads that I've been driving on. They are in really good condition with no potholes. Plus they are sublimely quiet and I was admiring the mountains and vistas and of course it's big bird of prey country. I stopped a few times for photos but unfortunately the scenery is shy and doesn't like it's picture taken. So you just have to take my word for it's beauty. Better still, go see for yourself.
