I managed to sleep through again from 12.30 to 6am so I was very chuffed when I looked out of the window and noticed a clear sky. The weather had predicted a cloudy day but it turned out be a stunning one. My friend has lived in Morecambe since the beginning of this year, so she hasn't experienced the Autumn months. It was a frosty breeze when we stepped out on the promenade but it turned out to be a lovely day for a long wander.
The small seaside town seems a little sad, although I love it. My friend complains about the lack of maintenance on the buildings and the like but I'm the eternal optimist and find the good. The promenade has had a great refurbishment and the added extras of artwork and statues are fun to spot. The town was very popular last century and a holiday resort called Pontins, once the largest in Britain, closed in 1993. Between 1956 and 1989, it was the home of the Miss Great Britain beauty contest. Two of the main piers got washed away and tourism began to decline. There's hints of scandal, resorts closing after short periods and the holidaymakers vanished. But today the sun was shining, dogs were being walked, runs being completed, shells being collected and Cafés being visited.
I simply loved the dramatic sky, the angle of the sun making us feel a little less chilly and all the beautiful opportunities for 'postcard pictures'. The tide was low when we walked out on the pier and there were a couple of fishermen casting their lines at the end. I'm still amazed at all the activities that exist being beside water, after a life of being landlocked, it's all so fascinating for me.
