Ridge runs

Wednesday 23rd March 2022 I have lived in the city of Johannesburg for almost 4 decades and I still forget how hilly it can be. I think of a city being flat somehow and downtown Jozi center is rather flat but the rest has a huge ridge all around it. The Witswatersrand Ridge is 56km long which I confess to not knowing until I googled it a few minutes ago.  My sister lives on a rocky edge of the western side which means that going for a run has some sharp incline at one or other stage. I felt really tired after my short run today, so much so that I had an afternoon nap. The resident dog woke me up to remind me of a promised game of fetch.

The crickets are loud tonight and the air is mild. It's a perfect highveld evening. It has been a soggy summer for the Jozi burgers, I still have a touch of my karoo freckle tan. After a couple of weeks back in the city, my road trip feels very distant and then I search for a photo on my phone and suddenly there's the landscapes, churches and sunshine.  A digital reminder to feel gratitude.
