Remote Comrades

Sunday 11th June 2023

Today was Comrades Marathon day and I managed to see a few clips online. Since 2008, I was a participant in it, against all possible explanations and much surprise. I found a way to get out on the road with a great bunch of people and do the impossible.  In 2019 I decided to not run it due to emotional reasons and that I didn't have the energy to keep my running on top of my priorities.

Then of course 2020 happened.  It really seemed to affect the equilibrium of so many long term runners. Perhaps it may have naturally happened but then so many people haven't gotten their running groove back (yet- and I include myself here) I only had a handful of runners to 'track' on the app and it was sad. Of course being 6000km away doesn't get me in the Comrades groove like my running ladies were. I felt tired all day though,  I'm blaming the collective energy drain of those athletes though, haha.

I managed to tag along to the supermarket and still have visual overload at the selection of things mostly unfamiliar.  I probably also got under my brother's feet in the attempt too, who knew about self packing such a huge trolley of food,  argh! He said a very wise thing to me though as I approached the till.

'Take your time...'

I think he might've seen the deer-in-headlights look in my eye and the sudden rush of anxiety.  I realised that he was right. I just had to breathe deeper and let him do it, although I was still buzzing around like a mosquito, haha.

I'm feeling grateful for the lovely weather and easy day and for all my personal Comrades Marathon memories which have certainly changed my self belief.

Never say never...
