It's a strange concept-rain. After one of the coldest, driest winters inland, the first rains are always spectacular. Petrichor, lightning strikes, dust swirls... all add up to the big announcement- Spring. Today I woke up to a muggy horison and heavy sky. Sadly no petrichor smell down here.
I was going to attend a walking tour, but the decision was made to move it to Thursday as thunder rumbled in the sky. Once the early morning haste was thwarted, I wondered how I was going to spend my day. I had an idea to drive through to the big mall, which is quite unlike me, but there are some things I am thinking of buying. Google Maps directed me to the front entrance of the mall and not the parkade. A pavement parking opened up so I slipped in.
My school friend messaged, inviting me to the harbour for lunch and I realised that it isn't far away by Johannesburg standards. So I sped round the mall on foot and then set my Maps back to the city. Parts of the South Beach area are under construction and I think the recent riots didn't help the construction work. Pulling into the harbour, I saw hundreds of pigeons, some big stork like birds and definitely a heron. There's a whole world of things to discover and learn, the local birds is one of those.
The view was somewhat disappointing but the catch up over lunch was lovely. Traveling 600km to get together is a little extreme but it was fun to wave to some brave sailors on their way to find the big 'catch' of the day. It might be better conditions for fishing, all the extra water in the air, Haha.
