Plett history

Updated: Feb 18, 2022

The cool misty air of yesterday gave way to a brilliantly blue sky with matching stunning sea. Plettenberg Bay was just showing off for me today and I loved it. My friend proudly directed me to all the best spots and I basked in the beauty of nature...( albeit in the roomy car, with welcome air-conditioning)

We stopped at Roggeberg nature reserve gates and saw the whale viewing boat in the bay and Christine described the devastating path of the 2017 fires- the trauma still hiding in the psyche of the residents. To my fresh eyes, I couldn't see the patchiness in the brush, nor the remains of burnt homes but the reflection was in my friends watery eyes. I sent out a silent prayer.

My personal guide then took me to the famous beaches, the Beacon Isle hotel ( present building built in 1972) the oldest structure in Plett (1788) the Old Timber Shed and then the old Anglican church. I was in my element.

We stopped for a coffee at the Plettenberg hotel which has stunning views. The maitre'd wasn't impressed that we changed our minds about lunch, but we weren't being bullied - being 'locals. We watched a local seagull control his swimming pool territory and I imagined that it must be the best place to hang out if I was a gull (it was pretty cool for this human too). Unfortunately my budget couldn't

stretch for a night in this hotel this trip, but I'm hoping for my next road trip that they are ready for me. 😉
