A few weeks back, I applied for a job. It was a part time position over Christmas.
In Lapland.
Yup, the plekkie in Finland. The job position?
Mrs Claus.
I hear you laugh, then stop laughing as you realise that it sounds plausible. The response to this, in person, from the people I've told, has been the same.
Unfortunately the position was filled, but the email said to book an interview for getting on the cancellation list. So I did exactly that and this morning, I had a chat with a delightful young lady, who was camping in Scotland. The job sounds fabulous and something that I would love, so she said to me to try again next year if I don't get on this year. There's limited Mrs Claus' but she said I'd be a perfect fit. So who knows, if I'm meant to read to kids in a cabin in Finland, things might just fall into place.
I'm loving the different opportunities that are available here for the likes of me. It certainly helps that I have family to stay with while I look for them, but I'm really enjoying finding out more and more about my homeland and the history of my 'people'.
Glasgow is a fascinating city with a history that I'm just beginning to scratch the surface of. I'm sticking with my Dad's history first because he worked in the shipyards as a boilermaker as a young man, before the industry started closing down and hundreds of men lost their jobs. The drive to get skilled workers in the Commonwealth countries saw us and many other families leave the Glasgow shore for different pastures. It's great to see the rejuvenation of the Clyde riverside now, with new houses and development, complete with walkway which had some runners and cyclists using it.
There's so much to learn, see and explore and I'm loving it all. Plus the sky was showing off again for me.
