Old York

Saturday 27th August 2022

I spent a glorious day walking on a 13th century city wall, gazing at a Minster, strolling through cobblestone Shambles Street which could date back to the 10th century and sat in front of St Mary's Abbey ruins. My perfect kind of day.

The City of York has a long history that I would get wrong in quoting.  But it has seen kings and queens, monks and wars, Romans and Vikings, students and farmers and now a very vibrant tourist industry. I love it. I have visited before when my niece lived here while at university and both my great nephews were born here.  I had walked on the wall before, but it's so much more exciting now that I actually appreciate the historical aspects.

There's so much to see and every sideways glance there's a photo opportunity. I even managed to do a couple of videos that I will edit together.  The weather played along too and it was dry and warm all afternoon.

There was the Saturday market and a few buskers about and lots of different tourists from around the world.  I didn't go into the Minster nor cathedral this time but instead went into a reconstructed medieval house of a wealthy family Lord William Snawsell, Mayor of York. The building had been hidden by modern facade until around 1980 when it was about to be demolished and it's medieval structure was uncovered. That reminded me of the building in downtown Jozi, Somerset house, with it's intact basement safety deposit vault (discovered in 2018) which is now a fantastic restaurant.

It was a lovely visit and I went round twice to get my £7- worth. The ticket also stays valid for a year so it will encourage me to return and stay longer to explore.

Tired feet, glad heart.
