Okes for the Oakes

Friday 5th January 2024

I decided to get out of my snoozing slump, hermit mode, today and realised that I hadn't been up to the old part of Modderfontein. The name comes from the water stream which back in 1896 was described as Mud river. (Although currently there's not enough mud to clean up the sewage problem). But I still like seeing the older parts which now house coffee shops, restaurants and a school.

While staying here last year, I managed to get inside the stunning Franz Hoenig mansion so I wasn't too concerned about seeing that building. I wanted to have a quick bite instead. There's a new coffee shop opened called the Muse, but it looked too busy so I returned to the very quiet Okes coffee shop around the corner. I was met by the resident cat, called Monster, who was very insistent that I give him some attention.

Housed in an old red-brick styled house, the interior reminded me of my youth. I had a yummy eggs Benedict, that I couldn't finish due to it being so big. The decor is fun and appropriate for my life style so I have some pictures other than Rusty tonight, lol.

We had a classic Highveld thunderstorm just as Rusty wanted his afternoon walk so we held off until it had eased. The steam rising from the hot tar made it feel eerie. The dog park was muddy but deserted so we didn't stay for too long.
