Needles rocks

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

Wednesday 26th October 2022

I slept better than the night before with only one careful visit to the downstairs bathroom. Waking to the sounds of what I thought were raindrops turned out to be dew off the roof. The sun showed up close to 8am and I Googled on how to spend my day.

I decided to try and get fresh air and at the same time I didn't want to push myself so opted for a bus ticket to the other side of the island.  Two buses and almost two hours later,  and managing to get the front seat of the double decker bus  I stopped at the Needles amusement park and cable car. I remembered it was school holidays when I saw the families lined up for the cable car. I joined the queue without really knowing where I was heading but it turned out a lovely trip down. One of the rules was no cellphones but I had to take a picture while on the chair.

I was warned about the sudden drop by a young child shrieking in horror up ahead but I enjoyed the view even with the wind rocking the chair a little too much.  The guys at the chair lift were very friendly and helpful unlike the Swiss Alps folk that left me to get in and out by myself - a memory that was triggered as I was told to 'sit down and mind my head'.

The sea seemed rough although the waves were tiny by Umhlanga standards and the beach area was full of pebbles. I am amazed by people who bring their dogs to amusement parks and museums. I decided to walk back up and the stairs were gentle and I got to the top rather quickly to wait for another bus.

The next bus saw me get out at the Old Battery where I was almost reluctant to pay the £8 entry fee but by now I wanted the Cafe. I also realised that I would be able to see the Needles closer so I went in to the rather windy point. Cannons and military details reminded me of Constitutional Hill a little.  I walked through the tunnel to the Old light and I had a slight moment of claustrophobia where the one light bulb was off in the narrow tunnel.  The wind was especially strong and I was blown around like I was my skinny young self.

I made my way via the tea room to the bus stop where I had too long a wait so decided to walk the one kilometre back to the amusement resort. I saw the bus waiting there, from a distance which prompted a run. I am very glad to report that the bus waited and I had a lovely sunny ride back to my bnb.

My throat seems to worsen at dusk so I sipped more Medlemon and vitamins and I'm looking forward to getting into my comfy bed.
