Last August I got a voucher advertisement showing Midge Ure in concert in Newcastle. He was one of 'my bands' with Ultravox and Visage and had a hit song called 'Vienna'. He's one of the few bands that I haven't seen until tonight.
My sister and I left Hartlepool by train on a stunningly sunny day and walked over the Millennium bridge to our hotel for the night. I'm really out of practice with carrying my rucksack and it's lighter than last year, so the last kilometer through the Sunday River market had me almost gnarly but I made it. The hotel has a stunning view of the river and I can see the lights twinkling as I write this.
We ended up having a dinner on route to the Town Hall for the show I had my second Sunday roast. My sister's was much tastier though, lol. As we neared the concert hall, we started spotting the older folk who were on the way to the concert too. There was a polite queue while we waited for the doors to open. My word the seats were for very short legged people. Fortunately it wasn't fully booked so after the tribute band we were able to swop to an aisle seat with a much better view of the stage.
Midge Ure appeared promptly and smartly and I was very impressed. He's 69 years old but could sing so well and he played a mean guitar. He explained how he was exploring his albums he did with the band and a few of the songs I wasn't that familiar with but the lighting was very clever. I was fascinated by watching the older audience get to their feet and sing along to all the synthesizer songs of the 80s. It was quite funny until I realised that I'm one of them!
We took a detour on the way back to the hotel but I didn't mind as I didn't have my heavy bag on my back and my ears needed to debuzz. I hope my earplugs work for my sister's snoring, haha.
