Luck of the Irish

Friday 17th March 2023

St Patrick's day.

My mum loved this date. I was always wondering what the fuss was about. Particularly as we lived many miles away from the Emerald Isle. I knew that my grandparents were Irish but I didn't know the importance until many years later.

And now it's even more important because of a small word.

Brexit.

The Republic of Ireland is still part of the European Union. This means that passport control is easier and possible work/live options are still feasible for Irish citizens.  So once my cousin has sorted out our maternal grandparents papers and gets her passport,  I can apply too. It opens up the world a little more.

My world opened up by returning to Modderfontein to housesit. It's interesting being here this time of the year. There's no Christmas decorations,  and the sunlight has a different angle.  The grass is beginning to turn and has a kind of autumn crunch underfoot. Leaves hide the pathway but Rusty doesn't need a path, he knows where to go.

When I arrived at the house this morning,  Rusty barked at me while in the car, but he recognised me quickly with only 3 months of a gap since he last saw me. I feel so honoured to be remembered by pets, and fortunate enough to receive their love for a few weeks at a time.  The human heart has the capacity for much love,  of varying kinds and dog love is one of my favourites. The cats appeared too and allowed me to stroke them,  then slid away into their realm.

I always feel my way through the world and the energy of places speak to me. This piece of the globe definitely has a wonderful feel and I'm grateful to immerse myself in it for a short time, complete with some furry love.
