Keep my hat on

Wednesday 17th May 2023

A year ago today,  I landed in London for my 'first middle age gap  year' and stayed in the Youth Hostel across from one of my bucket list buildings, the St Pancras hotel. My tooth pain started in the afternoon and I tried very hard to stay brave. But today I am pain free and relaxed, and also comfortable with the gap year idea having shifted into a nomadic lifestyle. I spent the day watching and observing how my family live.

I've mentioned it before,  my interest in seeing how people live their lives. When I studied my Psychology, one of the most interesting modules was the social psychology.  Seeing how my family members live their daily lives is fascinating. Today my one great nephew was particularly chatty and hearing how he gets on at school was a great honour. Some teenager things have changed completely yet others stay exactly the same. Being the crazy (great) aunt is my pleasure and I told them that I brought my blue wig over. I scared them last year on the train by threatening to wear my wig while sitting beside them.

In the middle of all this I had the excitement of my waterproof hat that I'd ordered online arrive.  I call it my Vera hat, and I got it because my jacket doesn't have a hood. My new hat packs into a small piece that will go into my handbag. I modelled it and my nephew laughed which is just the response I was after. It is very exciting having parcels arrive so quickly but I think having lived in SA for so long adds to the excitement because our parcel delivery service is rather slow there. But the key is self control,  haha!
