Hump day

Wednesday 3rd January 2024

Falling. Yip. I hit the ground this morning after half a mile of walking. A huge dragon rose out of the ground and grabbed my ankle.... Well, it was more a case of my dragging my feet and tripping. I saw red dust in a quick flash and I turned to see Rusty looking at me quizzically. My knee, hip and finger immediately pinged in pain as I was back upright as quickly as I'd fallen, don't ask me how that happens.

I knew that it was a hard knock as this is not my first ever adult fall while out jogging. So I rerouted Rusty to give him the most runaround without me needing to go on the tar roads. I knew that walking to loosen up the jarring would help too. After 40 minutes of whimpering limping, we headed back and I reluctantly got into the shower immediately. Grazed skin can burn in the shower but fortunately this wasn't too bad. The surgical spirits afterwards however, resulted in all sorts of animated curse words and facial expressions.

I'd arranged to catch up with a newish friend who lives out this way so I was glad to see a pharmacy next to the coffee shop to get plasters and ointments to patch me up. I love how Facebook has got me to meet up with such amazing characters and Peggy is delightful. We met in person the first time, just before lockdown on a competition prize tour and the virtual connection has done its job since. So today was a lovely personal catch up.

While I was at the coffee shop, I remembered another friend who was housesitting nearby so took a chance to arrange a meeting. Her husband came with her, and I've known him since I was 10 years old, so it was great to catch up with both of them. They have been travelling extensively for longer than I have so there was lots of advice and suggestions and the couple of hours flew by. (Plus I forgot to take a photo)

As I stood up, I realised that I must have bruised my sternum (breastbone) as it felt awful and sore. It feels like I've had chest compressions like a first aid dummy and now hours later, that ache is worse than my knee graze or other bruises. I have new respect for rugby players and other contact sports people, stunt people and anyone else who gets hurt regularly. Running can be a dangerous sport if you have clumsy feet and a weak core. Once my chest ache stops, I know I've got some work to do to strengthen myself.

Sigh... why did I ever stop? Never realised how fit I was before. But watch out 2024, I'll be back....

(You had to hear that in that voice, lol)
