I was born into a big family. I loved the noise, the different personalities, the buzz of daily life in a very small home where we still managed to respect each other's space.
As a teenager I loved staying over at my friend's home during school holidays but especially on a school night. How cheerful was she when she woke up? Did the siblings chat with each other, fight for the use of the bathroom, make their own sandwiches? It was fascinating to watch the mechanics of ordinary life. I didn't realise what I was doing at the time but observing life in its ordinary glory is fascinating for me.
In my psychology studies, I realised that a favourite module was social psychology and understanding the how and why of socialization. It didn't really have a commercial aspect though so I stayed with the counseling aspect. Yet in my life now I love being an observer of people and their daily lives, ( just can't bear to watch Big Brother and the like)
Having the privilege of staying with my friends and family on my World Tour of South Africa has been an honour, particularly on a 'school night'. Watching Marlene operate her business and prepare everything has been fun. We drove through to one of her craft market stalls today and I had to take some photos. The sun was brilliantly shining and I loved being a passenger as the world presented itself for pictures.
We've stayed together on many running weekends but I've obviously never stayed with her in this current context before. From the animals to laundry, to making food and TV soapies ..it's all been fantastic. Now sitting in the dark with the last half hour of power loadshedding, it's interesting listening to the sounds of the neighbourhood and experiencing yet another different part of my 'home' city.
