Heritage walking

Saturday 24th September 2022

I saw my South African nephew today. I call him that because he's the last offspring to have left the country.  He slipped into the UK the night before lockdown in December 2020. Since then he's managed to get himself a job on a gold mine. Yes, in Scotland,  a new gold mine has opened. I saw him last at Easter  when he popped over to SA. I have a large and convoluted family but it's nice being a part of the clan because they often have a bed for me to sleep in.

The sun was shining again so I decided to go explore a part of Paisley I'd been too lazy to do because there was a rather steep hill, lol. My toe feels a lot better so I walked up and over to the Coats Memorial which is besides the Paisley museum.  The Memorial is a stunning building which unfortunately I and a group of others couldn't seem to get inside.  The Museum is being refurbished so I walked higher up to the Observatory which is also being refurbished.  The roads are narrow and cobblestoned up at the top and there's some lovely houses.

I'm still amazed at how many huge churches there are built beside each other. Nowadays they are repurposed homes and one was a youth theatre, which is great. I wish I had had the opportunity to attend this type of thing in my youth,  but then again it might not have been this exciting uncovering the inner actress in my skits at this late age. I've been rather quiet on the skit side, I do have some almost-edited to post online, but the evenings seem to run away so quickly.

There was a charity event in the town so the music carried all across the town and lured me in. I held off till after my building search though as I knew the market was near my bus stop and I ended up doing a big loop. There's some great gems of buildings and bridges in the town and I missed the 'open door' weekend that a lot of heritage buildings participate in, the Coats Memorial being one of them. I've joined the social media pages now, so hopefully to catch them next time. I made my own heritage day today to celebrate with the South Africans, I just didn't smell any braais.
