I used my last of my vouchers that I bought in September, today. It was a tour of the Durban Botanical Gardens with my own guide on a golf cart. I knew it was going to be exciting when I was shown a kingfisher bird at the small pond at the entrance. The gardens were established in the 1840s as a way to test what kind of plants grow which means that all the main trees are not indigenous but exotic. And loved it.
The beautiful massive trunks over 150 years old, to the string like roots of the Indian Banda tree I was just enthralled.
Surrounded by busy roads the 27 acres of green, plenty of birds take up residence in this park. Pelicans balance their huge bodies and nests high on treetops with some herons sticking their gangly legs in for good measure. A paradise flycatcher flicked it's long tail almost in front of my eyes but was too quick for my camera. I even saw some tiny tree frogs. My voucher included a drink and the biggest type of oat crunchie ever so I sat near the colourful eucalyptus tree drinking my coffee after a lovely tour.
