Family exodus

Saturday 29th July 2023

After all the excitement of yesterday, I woke up tired but couldn't sleep more. It meant the rest of the day I felt very drained and almost dozed off a few times mid conversation. But I made it to 9pm before I excused myself and came up to my  room.

The impromptu family gathering continued for a short time before everyone dispersed back to their corners of the world.  It was lovely to see my young great nephews meet my nephews again and I was astounded by how the youngest had grown in the two months of me being here. We all huddled together for a quick group photo and fortunately the morning rain had stopped to give us a beautiful blue sky.

I've been here 2 and a half months and it feels like a long time since I left South Africa. I'm very grateful to the family who have helped me live this way and who welcome in and out of their lives in such an erratic and unpredictable way. It's great to have seen my two nephews who have been so scarce in my life the past few years and I'm glad to have just sat with them for a moment. I would have been happy to just sit and stare at them the whole time, but that's weird haha.  I do have the reputation of being the crazy aunt, so I might have gotten away with it.

In the meantime, I can stare at the photos,  lol.
