Ducting and dene

Sunday 21st August 2022

After the late night last night I woke up surprisingly early and almost fresh. The sun was splitting the sky so after a bacon sandwich my sister and I set off on a walk.

There are words I've never heard nor used before which are real things here in the UK. Today I saw a magnificent viaduct while walking in the Dene. Yup, words that I hadn't used before. So when my sister was asking which way would I prefer to go at a cross point, I simply had no idea. But I chose the sea route and we ended up circling back under the magnificent 10 arch viaduct built in 1905, and I can't find any reference to it's height,  so I'm calling it moerse high.

A Viaduct means a railway structure usually over a valley-or Dene.

Our walk had us on the harder sands on Crimdon beach to get up close to the Steetley Pier which I'd seen from the road during high tide last week. Today there were all sorts of people out on the beach, walking their dogs, playing and suntanning. The Pier is also a favourite spot for photographers, and it's really cool. This 2 000ft Pier was built in the 1960s to help a local factory get sea water to process Magnesia for bricks. At one stage this factory was Britain's only supplier of magnesia. The factory closed when the local steel industry waned and now all that remains of the factory is this Pier. The old factory grounds are now being developed into housing estates.

By the end of our walk we'd made 12km and my legs and feet are feeling it tonight. Sand walking is very different to road walking but it was a lovely day out in the good sea air.
