I love dolphins. The first time I saw them in the wild was on the Sarie Marais boat from the Durban harbour. My sister, Joanne had come from the UK for our other sister's wedding, and had joined me working on my first Comrades marathon TV broadcast. We got on the boat for R6- early in the morning and went out to see the view of the bay from the sea.( amazing what I am suddenly remembering) On the return trip, Joanne got really queasy and suddenly a pod of dolphins came up to the boat. I was thrilled. Joanne was still holding onto her breakfast. I've been a fan of the playful creatures ever since.
Today I had another up close encounter. Helping a friend present a tour to a school group, I was fortunate to be beside the harbour entrance again when one of the lads shouted 'dolphins'. It was a brilliant ending to a great talk on 'dredging the sand in the harbour'. We then all walked, well some of the boys hopped and skipped for almost 500 meters, in the sewage tunnel, about 20 meters under the sea to the other side of the harbour.
About three different dolphin pods were leaping past, making their way to the open sea, when we climbed out of the tunnel.
I then stopped at the marina to get some lunch and on route home, stopped by at the Old Fort and Moth museum. The fort is one of those 'I must stop there one day' kind of places and today was the day. Apart from swearing like one of those soldier-sailors when a monkey almost dropped on my head while walking to the gate, it was very interesting. I do need to return because the curator was busy closing up when I arrived, so I quickly snapped some pictures.
More power cuts tonight so in 20 minutes I might be asleep in the dark.
