Dogs of abundance

Saturday 15th April 2023

I woke up with the dog alarm clock telling me it was 6am as he barked a gentle signal to shake me out of bed. I realised that apart from one loo trip, I'd slept really well.

The bulldog is getting rather old and arthritic and we took the gentler steps round the back to get to the dogs bathroom.  It was a lovely mild morning initially but as I watched the Two Oceans Ultra marathon on the TV, the wind picked up and almost looked misty.

I had been invited to celebrate my late neighbour's birthday this afternoon being only three weeks since he passed away. I was a little nervous about leaving the dogs on the balcony and the whole alarm set-up because I've never left the house while sitting these animals before. But I bundled everything up and had to take a picture of the saddest faces as I was leaving.

I returned fairly quickly and played with the younger Labrador who somehow manages two tennis balls and a Tyre thing in his mouth.  As he spat out the one while keeping the other intact,  I marvelled at his skill of handling 'more'. I reflected on the notion that he is mimicking my sister and I was fascinated.

This sister has always had an abundance energy.  She's the closest to me in age and we were teenagers at the same time. Her philosophy is such that she doesn't appear to have any lack and that is brilliant. It also contrasts my old life philosophy of 'just enough'. I'm really enjoying the opportunity to watch my siblings and their different approaches to life. Same genes, same circumstances but uniquely different. This sister always has the mantra to 'buy two'. And the dog was showing me how he lives it. Sometimes it's a bit of a stretch, and he doesn't chase the thrown ball quite as quickly, but he discerns which one to spit out and he's rather selective in his choices. It's actually quite marvelous and I'm looking forward to playing more tomorrow.
