Cowes

Tuesday 25th October 2022

My bed was comfortable in my rather chilly loft room and I had gone to bed with a very sore throat. So I was feeling rather sorry for myself on waking and I had to rethink my weekend plans to stay with a friend. I didn't want to pass on any germs. But after a shower and some breakfast I decided to go walk in the fresh air.

I found a churchyard and realised that I felt fine so I continued walking up to Osborne Palace which was one of Queen Victoria's. The sun came out but my wallet stayed in at the entry fee. Instead I admired the trees and headed back down to the Quay.

I wasn't sure how long my good health would last so I tried to see as much locally as I could.  The Isle of Wight is 27 miles east to west and 13 miles north to south so I may need to get on a bus for my next few days. But I walked along the marina and had some fish and chips all the while spotting some fun synchronicities about a late friend.

My walk back to my bnb was very short so I kept on walking and saw the chain ferry over to the other side of Cowes. It was used like a floating bridge way back in 1859 crossing the Medina tidal River. It can carry 20 cars which was rather impressive. There's big strong chains going through and it seems to be like a winch but I'm still not sure how it works and that's after I Googled, lol.

The other side of the river had a lot more tourists and many coffee shops and restaurants and quirky buildings. It had a great 'vibe' and I walked happily along the sea front for a while. I found a 'granny cafe' that had a very reasonable priced menu and had an ice coffee before I made my way back to the ferry and to my bnb. I don't think I could live on an island,  after seeing this one and the Lido at Venice, just the idea of being dependent on boats with sea swells... erm, no. I quite like a large land mass. Although I'm still fascinated with all things boat and harbour like, I don't think I'm brave enough to sail.
