Cowboys and fun times

Saturday 20th January 2024

Today my sister and I drove westwards. I want to say the 'wild west' and I would be almost telling the truth as we went to Cowboy Town. This little gem of a place is on a sad side of Krugersdorp where there is still remnants of a gold mine dump. The streets are tatty, the factory buildings are empty and the few old mine houses are needing a lot of TLC. But the Cowboy Town itself is astounding.

The decor is fantastic and the creativity is everywhere. The designers must have a great sense of humour and there's so much to see. There's a pirate beach and a tiny chapel. Food stalls, market stalls and lots of antiques and junk, it's a fascinating quirky place and I loved it. Unfortunately it was very quiet. I'm surprised to see the shops have survived lockdown but I think the landlord must be charging minimal rent.

After some very enthusiastic youngsters lured us into one of the restaurants, we were very disappointed to have a fatty, boring steak. But it didn't dampen our spirits or enjoyment of the place. There's lots of food choices, we just got unlucky. While walking around taking hundreds of pictures, I got complimented on my hair. I was surprised and I even chatted a little bit in Afrikaans.

I'm not sure what would be a good drawcard to get the crowds visiting. I'd imagine a rodeo taking place there, but it really would be great to see lots of people show up and boost this unusual attraction.

I'm feeling really grateful again tonight, for the all the treasures that I have in my life.
