I had a couple of things to do today and one of them was to colour my hair. The last time I had my big sister helping so today's challenge was to do it solo without painting my brother's bathroom. Why do I not go to a hairdresser? Well that is one place where I feel really vulnerable and in South Africa I have a fabulous stylist who I'm totally comfortable with, so I was surprised by feeling my hesitation about a salon again. Plus, it's a lot of Pounds to get 'the works' so a box colour did the trick. And the bathroom is splash-free!
I then jumped on the bus down to the town to make sure my bank card works. In Britain they have a lot of self-help tellers in supermarkets, so yesterday I tried my card there. The alarm went off loudly, with 'card declined' and 'call for assistance' much to my utter embarrassment. I was dreading a repeat performance today and was delighted when the brain wave of 'cash machines' came to me. They don't want to bring up shame, they remain silent in breaking the news. However, it was successful and I am now the proud owner of two new plastic £10 notes. I deliberately went into Poundland so I could try my card free of humiliation and it worked fine.
The small town centre of Paisley feels familiar now, so I remembered one tea room that I'd taken pictures of so I headed up there for lunch. Unfortunately the rest of Paisley had the same idea and it was packed so turned back to a Cafe on the corner. I had Scottish breakfast with square sausage and Tattie scones and smiled my way through it.
Only a few more days left in Scotland before I head south. In a way I can't believe that this part of my stay is coming to an end, although I still have 5 weeks left before my South African return. I've realised that one way of easing my goodbyes is to have something exciting to look forward to and I certainly have some excitement ahead. But then again, colouring my hair was exciting today, so I think I've become adept at making the 'ordinary' exciting. Because there's always a little bit of magic anywhere I look.
