Today I woke feeling blessed. I'd slept well and I was alive. Plus I was finally going to watch my friend swim in the English Channel.
The cold water swim movement is something that Nordic countries have probably been doing for centuries but I like my balmy tropical temperatures. Anna started about a year ago, silently and without fuss- trust me- you would know if I did it!!!
We picked up her delightful friend Dianne, who shares many many things in common with me, including TV sound background history!
It was a lovely sunny morning and I was totally surprised by how many people do this. If my jaw could open more, it would be hanging. All friendly types with their great jackets and bags walking over the very pebbly beach like it was the Durban foreshore. I was sitting in Anna's artic jacket trying to shield my neck and my delicate South African composition while other people lay in their light tshirt.
My school friend Anna has a sunshiney disposition and she smiles it to everyone around her as she embraces the mother sea like it's her old school-days swimming pool. Every single one of them came out smiling. Apparently it is one of the side effects and no, it's not a grimace, that is what I was doing at the thought of swimming.
We finished off with a lovely chat and porridge at the local Waitrose and I managed to eat it, although I did have to cut the blueberries in half. It's such an honour getting an inside glimpse of the daily lives of my friends, now that I am almost up to speed. The area is stunningly beautiful, the sun was out, the company fabulous and the pain... manageable. Here's to improving health.
