I drove to the northern suburbs today. I met my friend who suggested we go to a restaurant called Teddy's in Hyde Park mall. I don't know the area at all.
The only time I ever went north was to meet my sister for lunch when she worked in Sandton. I think that must be over 25 years ago. So I forget that once I leave the (wild) west side of Johannesburg, it feels like a different country. There are so many interesting side streets with mansion walls that prevent my prying eye. But I definitely need to have a stay over and roam the streets.
The lunch was sublime. My jaw stayed slightly ajar until I gobbled up my delicious salmon. I was impressed by how reasonable the prices were too so it definitely needs return visits. I felt transported to some cosmopolitan city where loadshedding is non existent. It was just fabulous.
My drive home took longer because, well, tankers blowing up on the motorway meant that traffic was redirected through the back routes. Traffic lights unpowered meant long queues and I saw some 'amateur' traffic pointsmen skillfully controlling a massive intersection while 3km down the same road, the real traffic police were in their droves doing a roadblock. I know it's hard to believe, but it explains why Johannesburgers are so wired up. It certainly does take great skill to live in this city of extremes.
Gold rush city, gold rush energy.
