Chats and talks

Friday 2nd February 2024

It's often the unplanned days that turn out the nicest surprises. I caught up with a running friend with coffee and milktart and it was fabulous. After covering many miles on foot together, it was great to hear all about her life for the last few years. Anita was one of those people who inspired me to run because she literally only trained at the weekends. At the time I didn't understand that she is a natural runner who up to now, has run 28 consecutive Comrades. So we had a lovely visit.

My sister had bought me a ticket for a school hockey team fund raiser, that had local hero, Joey Evans do his keynote talk. I'd forgotten about it, and didn't realise it was tonight. So I booked an Uber and met up with her there. I was so impressed. Joey's story is heartbreaking and triumphant. He was paralysed in 2007 after an accident and decided to continue with his big dream of doing the Dakar Rally. 10 years later he made it to the start line. The story is so well delivered that he had his audience crying and laughing with him. I felt like I'd been there with him and I'm still feeling the emotions 2 hours later. Phew! If ever you hear of him presenting his talk, please don't hesitate to go. You won't regret it.
