Changing gears

Wednesday 30th August 2023

Waking up to a sunny morning makes me want to do things. But I'd promised myself a day of rest today so I thought it would be a good day to clean my bike a little. I'd been booked for an online client in the afternoon which also helped keep me still, haha.

As I walked outside to clean my bike, I caught sight of a cheerful squirrel bounding back into the safety of the trees. I think his London cousins had told him to be careful of this lady and her bike. Squirrels make me happy. So I hoped he'd come back while I was cleaning but he didn't.

While I had my bike out, I thought it would be a good time to test the hills in the hood. Plus I'd bought some clear glasses for 'bug-eye' protection, so I tried them out too. It was rubbish bin collection day though, so there were many more obstacles on the road for my short spin. I managed to go through the quiet paths and then turned back aware of the upcoming hill. I got stuck coming up as there was a lady getting into her car so I stopped. Haha. It meant that I couldn't get going again on the slope, so I did an about turn, fiddled with the gears which got me off the really heavy push one and had enough run-up to get all the way to my brother's driveway, yey! 1km done, mission accomplished.

My legs feel far better for the easy day and I enjoyed having my therapy client. Afterwards I started looking at my return route to South Africa. There's a few European cities that I want to visit but it's a lot more complicated, changing trains, borders and languages, so I narrowed my options down and am just letting my new itinerary brew a bit before I do any bookings. The interesting thing is that European hotels seem a lot more reasonable than the UK ones, plus there's a good choice of hostel options too. It also widens the search so it changes from being down the 'rabbit hole, into the 'rabbit warren'. Fortunately I didn't get too stressed about the choices.

Tomorrow is another day. And it's a Supermoon tonight. Although I haven't seen it yet. Howl....
