Sunday 1st May 2022
On this day back in 1987 I left South Africa for my gap year. I met my sister at my school friend's flat somewhere in London after a hovercraft trip across the English Channel. Oh how I thought I was going to travel. But I got scared. Europe was not Johannesburg and this youngster fairly fresh from the Vaal Triangle realised how big the world was.
Two weeks tomorrow I leave for another version of my gap year. This time I am better prepared ( I hope, haha)
Today was an interesting day with my longest walk in a while, of 11km at Delta Park complete with a grounding experience of hitting the earth, rather hard. Then lunch with some dear friends 40km away (Johannesburg is a large city). Then a short drive to my hotel for two nights at the Rand Airport in Germiston.
A few years ago when I first set eyes on the small Airport, I fell in love. It has an art deco style terminal building, with small planes and helicopters taxing all through the day. Even now at this time there's a chopper outside. I love it all. I said that one day I would love to stay in the Dakota Lodge, and voila, here I am.
Fabulous, simply fabulous.
The sunset was spectacular and I did a little video which you can watch here. I confused the hotel receptionist when I came out in my Katryn costume, like an air hostess. But my phone battery was very low so tomorrow I will investigate and record some more.
