Bricks and stones

Friday 24th February 2023

Today was another day of 'wall sitting'. It's amazing to see how quickly bricklayers do the laying. The wall seemed to sprout out of the foundations. There were 11 men working tirelessly and I asked the contractor questions about building as if I really know anything,  haha.

While sitting inside the house, I was reading about Blockhouses around South Africa at the time of the (second) Boer War. The author wrote about the length of time it took to build using stones and rocks collected from the surrounding areas. It took a lot longer than the week of new wall construction, more like a few months.

Stone masonry and bricklayers,  building up from the ground up. Blockhouses for war, garden walls for security and privacy.

I like personifying things. Looking at my outer world and finding situations reflecting my inner life is fun. It's not an exact science but it is often useful in understanding both aspects. I link my wall rebuilding to what I've been feeling for a while.  Rebuilding my self with the same foundations but stronger structures. The walls are still rough and unplastered and almost unrecognizable much like my inner systems of income earning and self worth.

But it's a new build and was necessary.  Much like the past 4 months being here in Johannesburg.  I haven't quite figured out the complete 'why' yet, because my original plan was to follow the summer.  Heavy rains for weeks on end and many 'dark' moments of no power triggered a few buttons which I'm still 'translating'. But I'm optimistic even if, right on cue, the lights went off, haha.
