Bloemfontein down

Thursday 3 March 2022

Waking up under the air-conditioning left me with a bit of a sore throat and icky feeling. It has absolutely nothing to do with my giving my prize car back in one week's time today. Lol.

I started packing my stuff when a sudden thought hit me. I hadn't received any booking confirmation from any accommodation. The reason? I hadn't booked any for tonight. I went into super booking mode and start scanning the what and where when I realised that perhaps another night in Bloemfontein might be the best idea. I contacted the owner of my current bnb and she was able to help me out by moving me across the property.

I was relieved that I could move my stuff straight away and go out for the day. I'd Googled a couple of places to visit and my first stop was a brunch at a coffee shop fairly nearby. It was on a small plot style place and I ended up having a delicious Jewish-style breakfast. Their iced coffee was delicious and they had wifi. After a leisurely lunch I set my GPS to the War museum which was across the city.

The traffic was very busy compared to my last few donkey cart towns and I was dodging more potholes than I had in 5 weeks. The War museum is huge and has a lot of outside memorials which are brilliantly presented and I made my way with more understanding but a very heavy heart. I really don't understand War and I am very fortunate that I wasn't obligated to fight in any of them. I ventured inside where there were good presentations and recall of stories, dates and details. I walked round the first couple of rooms but suddenly felt too overwhelmed so I zoomed through the rest and burst my way outside into the fresh air.

The clouds had built up and were looking ominous but I set out to the next art gallery attraction when the lightning started. I pulled over and changed my directions to take me back to my bnb. The outside sculptures would have to wait as the rain came down in torrents. I haven't see rain storms since I left Joburg on the 20th of January and I forgot how intense they can be. I spent the afternoon on my new comfy bed and caught up with all things digital.
