Johannesburg has a very temperate climate and according to Wikipedia has 'mild' temperatures with sunny days in the winter. Today wasn't one of them. I started my run feeling quite warm but by halfway I was pulling my buff around my ears to ward off the snowy Berg breeze. Our mountains are a 3 hour drive away, but we feel the effects of snow on their mountain tops quickly.
The soil is red and dry. Our rain appears in the Spring but today the air almost felt like rain with heavy with low lying cloud. I have always thought that the winter is bleak and scruffy because the grass dries up into yellow straw. Today I was waiting at a red light when out of the corner of my eye I saw the grass moving. Hundreds of tiny finches camouflaged on the verge, their quick twists and turns on the roots, the only give away of their presence. I smiled to myself thinking how nature doesn't care how 'scruffy' anything looks, as it supplies a meal to a flock of birds.
Hopefully the sun returns to warm the big glass windowed houses tomorrow.
