What an absolute pleasure of a day! Birthday week has already gifted me in so many ways.
It was wet and cool when I headed out early for the bus. I'd booked a ticket to go see the artist Banksy's first exhibition in 14 years for 9.15am. So I had to get a 'peak time' train which was rather busy compared to later times. I was super excited about the exhibition because I had seen some of his work but was looking forward to seeing more.
Man, I was thrilled! It was like I'd stepped inside the artist's mind, except that he's still anonymous. There were explanations and sketches, music and props and the stencils for so many pieces that I did actually recognise. He's like a social commentator and I am so appreciative of him offering the insight to his work. I was smiling all way around the gallery.
The fascinating explanation of the 'Girl with a balloon' that was shredded at the auction, complete with sketches, details and mechanics explained. Plus the video of the auction made me laugh at the nerve that Banksy has. It's intriguing and refreshing in a world that can be so serious.
He even had a mock bathroom scene with his rat sketches and toilet paper all around. Not quite the classic artist but insightful playful.
I'm a fan now.
Unfortunately no photos allowed and we had pouches that our phones were locked up in. I came outside with my mind swirling more than usual but very happy heart.
Then I had a tour of the Council buildings, a walk to the Necropolis, saw some street art and amazing buildings. This city forces me to keep looking up and I'm hooked. Tomorrow is a 'rest' day so will expand on today's adventures, tomorrow.
