Arty magic

Saturday 27th January 2024

Today I joined a friend and his very talented daughter to an Urban Sketchers morning in Parkview. This is a great initiative to join fellow artists once a month to visit and draw various landscapes of the city. Today I counted roughly 50 people that showed up with paper and tools in hand to record the 'Old Lake Market' which is about to change owners with all tenants of the market stores moving out.

The building was once a movie house, or bioscope in South African terms, but in the 80s it was sold and repurposed to rhe current market style. The Parkview area is an affluent area and is around the corner from the Johannesburg Zoo and Lake. The houses are an eclectic mix of modern to grand heritage with some container builds thrown in to spice it up.

It's not a particularly pretty building for me but it was fascinating to see how everyone interpreted it differently on paper.

I used some of the young artist's supplies to do a flash of a sketch. I imagined the ghosts of the vehicles of the past and tried to draw both an old fashioned car and a horse and carriage. I realised I wasn't in the mood to draw plus I was hungry, haha. After 10 minutes I was bored, I think my busy brain is too used to quick phone scrolling so I caught up with my friend and joined him for a cuppa and some food.

While eating my breakfast the police drove past with the HORSE unit! I was ecstatic having drawn my pony just a half hour before. I laughed and remarked 'all I need now is a vintage car to arrive...' The words were still fresh on my lips when you can guess what happened? Yip, a Morris Minor drove past and parked in the exact spot that I'd drawn it!!!! I was giggling much better and I love these 'magical' synchronicities.

After 3 hours everyone gathered and had a 'throw down' of their art and a collective photo. It was really cool and Caitlin did an amazing art piece. The talent is astounding and it's so cool to see so many people out and about on the street doing fun things!
