A walk on the east side

Monday 20th March 2023

I was extremely happy to wake up for the first time at 4.30am. It meant that I had 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep and I was ecstatic. I did have crazy dreams as usual but with only one trip to the loo, even Rusty thought it was walk time. But I managed to convince him to give me more time to sleep.

The Monday morning traffic was surprisingly heavy at 6.20am because tomorrow is a public holiday and today was a day of possible protest. Fortunately disaster was averted and the rest of the day felt like a Sunday.  I had a few phone calls but most of the day was spent with the telly on. I did do a tiny bit of writing but I kept getting distracted.

Rusty's clock is amazing and he starts rounding me up for his afternoon walk at 4.30pm. It was still very hot so I thought I'd go a shadier route which gave Rusty the chance to wave at all the unlucky dogs barking at him getting walked.

I had a very good internal talk with myself on this walk. It's often said that walking is physical therapy and I can understand why. My running has been brilliant in bringing me back to myself and I thought about all the aha moments people get while walking the Camino.  The pilgrimage route is often blamed but I think it's the physical aspects that develops the routine and calms the mind down. I felt good when I got back and I was impressed with myself for remembering my cooling towel for the walk.

Right now I'm watching Rusty chew the eyes off his comforting teddy bear and he's doing it so carefully and gently I'm scared to stop him. He lay on me for a while and he's a lot bigger than Molly so he can't stay long because it's too hot. I'm not complaining about the heat because anyday now the switch can be flicked and it's suddenly cold. That's Johannesburg's seasons for me.
