Way back in August, I saw an advert for an evening with SA crime author Deon Meyer at Montecasino. I knew my dear friend loves his books and I thoroughly enjoyed the one I read so I booked us two tickets for the event.
We arranged to go for supper beforehand and we were surprised to see the center so busy being a 'school night'. Marlene mentioned that she found it strange that so many people go out at night, and I agreed.
It was a lovely summer evening with what looked like thousands, of swallows all swooping around the tower on the square.
I had a chuckle when walking around the casino complex, as my friend kept saying while in Italy that it looked just like Montecasino, and it does!. We had a yummy dinner and then made our way to the theatre.
It was like the aristocrats of the Afrikaans world, as I recognised so many faces but the names escaped me. Our bar stool chairs were upgraded because the theatre wasn't full so we ended up with nice seats.
Then Coenie de Villiers came on stage to play the piano and sing. Our author friend only came on about half way through the first set and he read some lovely stories about the Karoo with music as a backdrop.
At the interval we decided we'd seen enough as Deon wasn't reading in the second half so we slipped away. It was quite deep Afrikaans so some of the poetry went over my head. The photos of the Karoo lands did trigger my memories of my big blue car in February and I wondered if I'd get another roadtrip in sometime. It was an enjoyable evening and now the crickets are chirping and the hungry mozzies are hunting for my blood.
Summer...
