A coffee shop trail

Updated: Apr 9, 2022

Friday 8th April 2022 Another day of surprises and delights on the east side of the city. I stopped in at a mall first and my takkies felt like I was ice skating on the shiny floors. Airplanes were flying directly overhead and  they  were the big international Jumbos jets which kept me smiling.

I wasn't too sure where I was heading when I left the mall initially but I have been 'saving' friend's suggestions on my phone so punched in a steampunk bistro. My check-in for my next bnb was only at 2pm so I had a couple of hours to explore.

The Cut and Craft Bistro is in Kensington and turned out to be a stunning place. Steampunk is a movement that I totally connected with when I first visited the Cape Town 'Truth Coffee' shop. This bistro has a section for a speakeasy and my imagination started running wild. The waiters were fabulous and I loved their dress up costumes. Definitely needs a return visit.

My drive then took me past the China Town area in Cyrildene. It's a small block of shops with mandarin signs, and it feels like stepping into a real Asian city. I walked up and down the street fairly quickly but didn't venture in anywhere. Another return needed too.

A quick stop for some peppermint tea at the Red Door Cafe in Edenvale made me realise that there are plenty of places that will be revisited. Johannesburg has hidden gems everywhere,  but like mining  you have to dig amongst the dirt to find them. But when you find them they shine like gold in the sun.
